Shedd tries to save grouper, an endangered fish

Chicago's Shedd Aquarium warns the tasty fish may be headed to extinction. At Isaacson and Stein Fish Company, located just west of Chicago's Loop, you can get a good look at fresh grouper. It has firm white meat and excellent flavor.

Shedd Aquarium

Shedd Aquarium draws an average of 2 million visitors each year and with good reason. It is a nonprofit aquarium supported by the people of Chicago and opened its doors more than 80 years ago in 1930. It's name comes from John Graves Shedd who put up most of the initial funding, he was president and chairman of the board of Marshall Field & Company. The original aquarium cost $3.25 million to build and a recent expansion to renovate and add the Oceanarium and Wild Reef exhibits cost $45 million dollars by comparison. Shedd Aquarium is over 422000 square feet and offers plenty to see and do. Most visitors won't make it through every single exhibit in just one day. Some of the things you'll find here at Shedd Aquarium include a turtle named Nickel and Granddad, who they believe is the oldest living fish at any aquarium in the entire world. There are also Beluga Whales and recently the aquarium had two babies born within the span of a few weeks as well as a dolphin calf. A brand new special exhibit that just opened this year highlights Jellies and their mystifying natural history. These are quite literally the most dangerous animals in the ocean and they thrive without bones, blood or brains which is quite an amazing feat. Shedd Aquarium is easily one of the top five aquariums in the United States although where it ranks within that top five is probably a contentious debate among varying supporters.
